South Korea and Japan have begun discussions on a potential military logistics support agreement, as revealed by South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back after meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, at a regional security forum in Singapore. The proposed deal, known as an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement, would allow the two nations to share and acquire military supplies like fuel, food, and ammunition for joint military operations and activities.
Ahn highlighted the political sensitivity of the issue and stressed the need for public understanding and support in both South Korea and Japan before any agreement could move forward. He noted that South Korea plans to handle the matter with caution, given the historical tensions that linger due to Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. Some South Koreans remain wary of deepening military ties with Japan, reflecting these historical sensitivities.
In a related development, Ahn and Koizumi also agreed to consider holding a joint humanitarian search-and-rescue exercise slated for June. If conducted, it would be the first such exercise between the two countries in nearly ten years, signaling a potential shift towards enhanced security cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo.
