Japanese Firms Strengthen Ties with India in Semiconductor Sector Expansion

by admin477351

Japanese semiconductor-related companies are increasingly expanding their operations in India as the country endeavors to build a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. This move comes as more than 30 Japanese companies took part in Semicon India 2026, held in New Delhi, where discussions centered around investment, technology partnerships, supply chains, and research and development.

India is positioning itself as a global hub for semiconductors, focusing on various areas such as chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government has intensified its efforts to develop domestic semiconductor capabilities and nurture a skilled workforce. This strategic push aligns with the interests of several Japanese firms that are seeking to establish partnerships with Indian companies.

For instance, Fujifilm has entered into a collaboration with Tata Electronics to advance semiconductor materials, while Sumitomo Chemical is exploring opportunities for cooperation in semiconductor material supply chains. Additionally, Enomoto is expected to provide production technology support to Indian counterparts.

Tokyo Electron is also making significant strides by planning to open a training center in Gujarat by 2027. This facility aims to cultivate engineers specializing in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, addressing a critical gap in India’s semiconductor workforce.

Industry officials have pointed out that while India boasts a large pool of engineering talent, there remains a scarcity of workers with specialized skills in the semiconductor sector. The growing involvement of Japanese companies is anticipated to facilitate technology transfer, workforce development, and the strengthening of India’s semiconductor supply chain.
