Takaichi emphasized Japan’s commitment to contributing to a free and open international order grounded in international law.
Highlighting the current geopolitical climate, Takaichi noted the end of the stable environment that followed the Cold War and stressed the indispensable role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security. She called for comprehensive reforms to the UN and its Security Council to better reflect the international community’s diversity and needs.
Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s long-standing support for international judicial bodies, including the ICC, a stance Japan has maintained since the conclusion of World War II. Her speech notably avoided direct commentary on the U.S. sanctions imposed on ICC President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national.
Addressing pressing international issues, Takaichi condemned Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, labeling unilateral forceful changes to the status quo as unacceptable. She urged the international community to enhance efforts in tackling North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and missile tests, while reiterating Japan’s readiness for dialogue to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
On economic and energy matters, the Prime Minister expressed Japan’s intention to collaborate with Gulf nations to bolster energy security and ensure stable supply chains, especially in light of recent disruptions in major trade routes. She advocated for increased international cooperation on managing critical resources and advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
