In addition to the interaction with China, Motegi also confirmed having a brief discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This marked the first known engagement between the top diplomats of Japan and Russia since the latter’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The conversation, according to Motegi, covered topics related to bilateral relations and regional issues, signaling a potential thaw in diplomatic ties.
Despite these renewed diplomatic contacts, Japan remains firm in its support for Ukraine and maintains its sanctions against Russia.
