This evening’s announcement of the 98th Academy Awards nominations by Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman represented a triumph for two filmmakers. Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler saw their films dominate the nominations.
The triumph of both filmmakers came through extensive recognition across categories. Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” triumphed with nominations in directing, adapted screenplay, and multiple acting categories. Leonardo DiCaprio’s leading performance and supporting work from the ensemble earned acknowledgment.
Coogler’s “Sinners” achieved similar triumph through nominations in directing, cinematography, production design, and acting. The film’s visual innovation and storytelling power clearly resonated with Academy voters across all branches.
Beyond these triumphing filmmakers, other directors earned recognition. Josh Safdie’s work on “Marty Supreme” earned directing and other nominations, while Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” and Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” also found success. Unfortunately, Neeraj Ghaywan experienced disappointment with “Homebound” receiving zero nominations.
The 98th Academy Awards take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air at 7 p.m. ET on ABC, where triumphing nominees will compete for Oscar victories.
