A new era for movie trailers has arrived, and it began on March 17 with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Its trailer became the first in film history to cross one billion views, reaching that landmark in just four days. Tom Holland’s fourth MCU Spider-Man film has redefined what it means for a movie to generate pre-release excitement.
The trailer tells the story of a Peter Parker who has been living quietly and forgotten since the events of No Way Home. In the four years since that film’s conclusion, Peter has no name, no support system, and no recognition — only a responsibility he cannot abandon. The trailer’s portrayal of his loneliness and quiet heroism immediately captured the hearts of viewers around the world.
WaveMetrix tracking data confirmed the trailer had crossed 1.1 billion views by Tuesday. In its first 24 hours, the trailer drew 718.6 million views, far surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine’s record of 365 million, No Way Home’s record of 355.5 million, and GTA VI’s entertainment record of 475 million. The trailer has no historical precedent in terms of first-day or total viewership.
Social media amplified the trailer’s impact enormously. Trending hashtags, fan videos, and emotional discussions dominated platforms from Twitter to YouTube within hours of the footage going live. The fan-generated alternate title “Spider-Man: Broke, Depressed, Alone, Heartbroken” became a widely shared phrase that captured the emotional tone of what viewers saw.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the film features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando. Brand New Day releases on July 31 and will screen in India in six languages across all premium formats. The record books have been rewritten, and the biggest superhero release of the year is still months away.
