Canada has taken a significant step in expanding its defense collaborations by becoming the first observer nation of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). This initiative, spearheaded by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, aims to develop an advanced sixth-generation stealth fighter jet by 2035. The program, which began in 2022, is led by major defense contractors BAE Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Leonardo from the UK, Japan, and Italy, respectively.
The observer status allows Canada to gain valuable insights into the program’s capability development, industrial cooperation, and strategic planning without any financial commitment. This participation is seen as a strategic move for Canada to diversify its defense partnerships beyond its traditional alignment with the United States, enhancing ties with European and Indo-Pacific nations.
