Japan is set to embark on an ambitious plan to replace several aging nuclear reactors by the 2050s, aiming to secure long-term energy supplies and meet the rising demand for electricity. A draft proposal from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry suggests that up to five reactors could be replaced by the 2040s, with approximately 14 more to follow by the 2050s. This strategy is designed to ensure a stable power supply as the operational lifespan of current facilities comes to an end.
Projected to play a crucial role in Japan’s energy future, nuclear power is expected to constitute around 20 percent of the nation’s electricity generation in the coming decades, a significant increase from its current contribution of less than 10 percent. This shift is driven by Japan’s increasing energy needs, which are being fueled by the growth of artificial intelligence, data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and other advanced technological sectors. Industry experts warn of a potential power shortage by the 2040s if new generation capacity is not developed.
This initiative represents Japan’s first explicit outline of reactor replacement targets, signaling a decisive step to bolster energy security and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. Following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Japan significantly reduced its nuclear energy dependency, leading to the shutdown of its reactor fleet.
