A Japanese trade delegation led by former Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has visited China with the aim of maintaining dialogue and improving strained relations between the two countries. The delegation, which includes around 50 members such as Japanese business executives, is looking to engage with senior Chinese officials during their visit.
Iwaya emphasized the importance of dialogue as Japan-China relations face challenges, particularly in light of recent security concerns. These tensions were exacerbated by comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a potential Japanese response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan. Iwaya expressed his willingness to exchange views with Chinese leaders if the opportunity presents itself.
The visit takes place shortly after a significant US-China summit in Washington, where Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump discussed various bilateral issues, including trade and artificial intelligence. This context underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in the region.
The Japanese delegation’s trip had been delayed previously due to the death of former Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, who had been leading the trade promotion organization. The delegation’s visit signals Japan’s continued interest in fostering constructive relationships with China, despite existing tensions.
