Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reaffirmed Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine during her first telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on November 5, pledging continued assistance in the country’s defense and pursuit of a lasting peace.

During the 30-minute discussion, Takaichi assured Zelenskyy that Japan’s position of solidarity — “Japan stands with Ukraine” — remains firm. She emphasized Tokyo’s commitment to backing Ukraine’s efforts to achieve a “just and lasting peace” amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Zelenskyy, in a social media post following the talks, said he had informed Takaichi about Kyiv’s plans to develop partnerships for joint production of modern defense weapons and highlighted Ukraine’s urgent need to strengthen air defenses and increase pressure on Russia. He also extended an invitation for the Japanese leader to visit Ukraine, expressing confidence that bilateral cooperation “has even greater potential than it does now.”

On the same day, Takaichi also spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with both leaders agreeing to deepen G7 unity and cooperation among like-minded nations to ensure a free, open, and stable international order.
