Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market with its first foldable iPhone is poised to invigorate a sector that has recently faced a slowdown. As global shipments of foldable smartphones dropped by 8% in the first half of 2026, industry analysts are optimistic about a robust recovery in the latter half of the year. Projections suggest that total shipments for 2026 could reach approximately 23 million units, with continued growth expected through 2027.
Analysts predict that Apple’s debut could quickly capture a significant portion of the market. According to Smart Analytics Global, Apple might secure 25% of global foldable shipments by the end of 2026, potentially rising to 41% by 2027. This could reshape the competitive landscape, presenting fresh challenges to established players such as Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Despite the promising outlook, Apple is expected to encounter initial supply challenges due to the complexities involved in manufacturing foldable devices. With an anticipated price tag exceeding $2,000, the foldable iPhone might initially be limited in demand and distribution, likely launching in select markets before a broader global rollout.
Market research firm IDC forecasts that Apple’s entrance into the foldable sector could transform it into one of the smartphone industry’s fastest-growing segments. By 2027, Apple is projected to ship over 17 million foldable iPhones, potentially commanding around 40% of the global market. IDC estimates the overall foldable smartphone market will grow to 22.9 million units in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, followed by an 18% rise to approximately 27 million units in 2027.
Reports indicate that Apple’s inaugural foldable device may include a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch foldable main display, alongside features like Touch ID, an A20 Pro chip utilizing a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras. If Apple can navigate the production hurdles and manage the high price point, its entry could significantly bolster the foldable smartphone category and establish the company as a dominant force in the market in a relatively short time.
