Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to launch a new procurement system aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies from startups into its defense equipment, as announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on Friday. This initiative seeks to encourage greater participation from startups by providing upfront funding for the development of technology, particularly in areas such as drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies that are crucial for modern warfare.
The first phase of this fast-track program will involve inviting proposals for cost-effective, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment intended for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. A key focus will be on prioritizing the use of domestically produced components. Multiple companies will initially be selected at the concept stage, with candidates gradually narrowed down through a process of prototype development and testing.
In addition to drones, the ministry is also exploring technologies that can enhance warehouse management, reduce staffing needs, and address equipment issues related to aircraft noise and working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to bolster Japan’s defense capabilities through technological innovation.
Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2. The Defense Ministry anticipates that this new system will expedite the adoption of innovative technologies, thereby strengthening Japan’s defense posture. By fostering collaboration with startups, the ministry aims to tap into the creativity and agility of smaller companies to meet the evolving needs of national defense.
