Việt Nam and Japan have reached a consensus to enhance their defence cooperation, focusing on key strategic areas such as military training, cybersecurity, and defence industry development. This decision was cemented during a meeting in Hà Nội between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces. The discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties and optimizing the implementation of existing cooperation agreements.
General Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to bolstering consultation and dialogue mechanisms, fostering collaboration among military branches, and advancing cooperation in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He highlighted that these defence relations have evolved into a crucial aspect of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Việt Nam and Japan. The Vietnamese minister also emphasized Japan’s role in supporting personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery efforts, while advocating for more scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel in fields like science, engineering, and technology.
The partnership between Việt Nam and Japan is pivotal, with Japan being one of Việt Nam’s key economic and strategic partners. Their cooperation extends across trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. Over recent years, defence cooperation has also seen significant expansion, facilitated by regular policy dialogues and military consultations.
General Uchikura reinforced Japan’s commitment to deepening defence ties with Việt Nam, voicing support for expanding collaboration in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. The mutual understanding between the two nations aims to enhance regional stability and foster long-term strategic cooperation.
Both countries have agreed to maintain close coordination to further build mutual trust and expand their cooperation. This commitment signifies a continued effort from Việt Nam and Japan to fortify their strategic partnership, ensuring a stable and prosperous future for both nations.
